The Calumet County Highway Department is closely monitoring winter operations to manage snow and ice events effectively. This winter has seen a significant increase in such events, doubling previous years' records, and consequently, a rise in salt usage. Data indicates that we might exhaust our salt supply by the end of winter. Thus, we've decided to implement salt conservation measures starting today, and may reassess the situation later in the season.
Level of Service (LOS) Reduction on LOW-VOLUME County Roads
- Post-Storms: Expect bare wheel tracks, meaning two clear tracks in the main driving lanes where vehicle tires make contact. There will be a thin layer of snow or ice on the centerline of the road, on the edge line and between the wheel tracks.
- Safety Considerations: Bare wheel tracks allow for tires to have direct contact with the pavement. Continue to drive cautiously, especially when tires exit the bare tracks at intersections, turns, or around other vehicles.
Impact and Conservation Goals
- Objective: By slightly lowering the LOS on low-volume roads, we aim to conserve salt for use on high-volume roads, maintaining the current LOS there.
- Long-Term Saving: This strategy is designed to ensure our salt supply lasts throughout the winter, prioritizing safety and resource management.
