Calumet County Redistricting 2021

Under Section 59.10 of the Wisconsin Statutes, county governments in Wisconsin must create new county board district boundaries every ten years, immediately after the federal census.  Counties begin the decennial redistricting process with a “clean slate.” All existing district and ward lines are erased, and a county is able to draw new lines based on the results of the 2020 decennial census to reflect any population shifts. This is a strictly non-political process that employs traditional concepts of redistricting including compactness, contiguity, and substantial equivalence of population.

Calumet County was notified on January 28 that the U.S. Census Bureau adjusted its 2020 operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in delays to the Bureau’s publishing of data necessary to redistrict at the county and municipal levels. The redistricting data is typically received no later than April 1 but now isn’t expected until July 31.

Due to this delay, we will not be able to commence the redistricting process within the timeframe required by statute.  We now anticipate receiving the redistricting data on August 24 and will commence drafting the “Tentative Supervisory District Plan” immediately thereafter.
